Mayoral Minute No. MM1/09

Date of Meeting: 11/02/2009

28      VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE APPEAL

The councillors and staff of Hornsby Shire Council, like all of our local residents, have been shocked by the bushfire tragedy in Victoria.

You will not be surprised to know that Hornsby, like many other Councils, has been inundated with ideas from local residents and service organisations to raise funds for the Victorian bush fire appeal.  Residents of the Bushland Shire have been particularly touched, knowing only too well the dangers that the bush can present after a hot and dry summer.

At tonight’s Ordinary meeting there will be a minute's silence prior to this mayoral minute that will pledge a financial donation from Hornsby Shire Council to one of the bushfire appeals and outline other ways that Council will support local efforts to raise funds and offer other kinds of support.

This Saturday night the Lions Club of Hornsby has agreed to collect donations at Council's "Movies under the Stars" at Asquith Oval.  As you are aware, this is an annual free event that Hornsby Council puts on for local families on Saturday nights in February.  Movies will be shown the following two Saturdays at Berowra and Westleigh.

The Our Community website - www.ourcommunity.com.au/bushfirehelp - offers a quick and easy reference for residents wanting to support the Victorian bushfire appeal. A link is available to this website from the Hornsby Shire Council homepage.

Hornsby Shire Council has a very important partnership with the Rural Fire Service and this partnership has achieved much over many years.  Most recently we have seen new fire stations at Brooklyn, Arcadia and Berowra Waters, along with the new fire control centre at Berowra which is currently under construction. In the Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai district there are 20 brigades with 600 personnel, 26 land-based fire-fighting vehicles, 5 boats and 26 support vehicles ready to respond to any bushfire emergency in this area.

We should all be grateful for the work of the RFS at the most difficult of times.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT:

1.       Council donate $10,000 from its 2008/09 Donations Programme to an appropriate Victorian          bush fire appeal; and

2.       For the period to 30 June 2009, fees for use of Council property for the purpose of a fundraising   activity by a charitable organisation to benefit a Victorian bushfire appeal be waived and be         met from the 2008/09 Donations Programme.
