Mayoral Minute No. MM4/14

Date of Meeting: 14/05/2014

15      SEPTEMBER 2014 GENERAL MEETING - PROPOSED CHANGE OF MEETING DATE

The purpose of this Minute is to recommend that Council’s 10 September 2014 General Meeting be rescheduled to Wednesday 3 September 2014.  The reason for the recommendation is that Council has just been advised that its application to participate in the Future Cities Program (refer Group Manager’s Report No. PL29/14 considered by Council at its 9 April 2014 General Meeting) has been successful, and because a component of that Program is to be undertaken during the second week of September, the General Manager, the Group Manager Planning and I will be unable to attend the General Meeting currently scheduled for 10 September 2014.

The Future Cities Program is an initiative of the Future Cities Collaborative at the United States Studies Centre partnered by the NSW Government; the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning; local and international partners; and local government leaders.  The Program is focused on supporting local government leaders from regional and metropolitan cities in building sustainable and liveable communities.  The Future Cities Collaborative aims to provide elected leaders and Council staff the opportunity to explore and discover innovative ways to address some urban renewal challenges they face.

The Program is based on the Mayors’ Institute Forum conducted in the United States where civic leaders meet to work with industry experts to develop innovative solutions for re-designing precincts so they are great places to live and work, and are also adaptive to the changes in liveability and sustainability demands – from renewing town centres or high streets, to re-designing community precincts and parks, or alternative transport possibilities.  The approximate cost of Council’s participation in the Program is $15,000 which will be sourced from Council’s existing strategic planning and training budgets.

It is noted that the Group Manager will be submitting a further report about Council’s successful application to the Program in the near future.  That report will include details of the nominations received by Council in respect of a suitable business leader with an interest in town centre renewal to join Council’s delegation to participate in the Program.

Having regard to the above, it is proposed that the September General Meeting be rescheduled to 3 September 2014.  Such change will not affect any other meetings which are currently listed in the Councillors’ Calendar for September.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT:

1.         Council’s September 2014 General Meeting be rescheduled to Wednesday 3 September 2014.

2.         Appropriate advertising be undertaken to advise the public of the change in the General Meeting date.
