17      RETIREMENT OF MR BILL AITKEN - EDITOR OF THE MONTHLY CHRONICLE

This evening I would like to make special mention of one of our members of the community, Mr Bill Aitken.

Bill is well known to us as the owner/editor of The Monthly Chronicle.

Tonight is his final Council meeting as Bill has announced he is retiring.

Bill has been entrenched in our community for several decades. Prior to setting up The Monthly Chronicle he was Manager of Northgate Shopping Centre here in Hornsby.

In April 1989 Bill launched The Monthly Chronicle. Today it is now delivered to 43,800 residential letterboxes and 3,000 local businesses in a number of suburbs within the Hornsby Shire.

Bill has been a keen reporter of ‘readable’ local news and issues affecting people’s lives. He tells it as he sees it and I believe he provides a very valuable service to the community.  Bill has always maintained journalistic independence and integrity and due to Bill’s dedication and professionalism, The Monthly Chronicle is regarded as a highly popular, much loved local publication by many people.  Council has been one of the many beneficiaries in the community by having the opportunity to advertise and promote community news and events in the paper.

Fortunately for the readers, the paper will continue under the new ownership of another local business, Adelphi Design and Print, publishers of Galston and Glenorie Community News.

On behalf of Council and the people of Hornsby Shire I would like to thank you Bill for your years at the helm and congratulate you on a job well done.

I would also like to wish you and your wife all the very best for the next chapter of your lives.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council expresses its appreciation and congratulations to Bill Aitken for his years of service to the Hornsby Shire community and wishes him and his family a happy retirement.

STEVE RUSSELL

Mayor
