1        HORNSBY WEST SIDE BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

As part of its ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the historic heart of Hornsby, the West Side, in 2016 Council endorsed the painting of a new public mural in Dural Lane.  This built on previous Council initiatives such as the planting of new street trees throughout the West Side.

Since that time, the community has provided me with many positive comments about the trees as well as the mural that was painted by artist, Hugues Sineux and how this has helped to create a greater sense of place and belonging in the area.

Dural Lane comes alive each year during Council’s marquee event - The West Side Vibe. This year, the laneway was once again brought to life with more than 6000 residents attending the event and the mural added significantly to the ambience of the West Side Vibe.

Noting the positive impact of the first mural, I believe that it would be appropriate for Council to complete the transformation of this laneway precinct with a second public mural by Hugues Sineux in Dural Lane with funds to be taken from the relevant restricted asset which would allow the project to proceed without impacting on Council’s other programs.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council endorse the commissioning of a second mural in Dural Lane, Hornsby as part of an ongoing urban beautification process on the West Side of Hornsby.

Mayoral Minute No. MM11/17

Date of Meeting: 12/07/2017

2        RECOGNITION OF GUMNUT COMMUNITY CENTRE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Gumnut Community Centre, originally built as the West Pennant Hills School of the Arts in 1921, was transferred to Council in 1980 and has been operated by a Volunteer Management Committee on behalf of Council since that time.

The Cherrybrook Community Pre-School is the major tenant of the Gumnut Community Centre, having operated a pre-school from the facility since the 1987. The community centre is also available for use by other groups in the evenings and on weekends.

Council has recently been working with various community kindergartens across the Shire to enter into direct, long term leases that will provide them with certainty of tenure and enable them to undertake appropriate business planning. In the case of Cherrybrook Community Pre-School this will also transition the responsibility for continued community hiring of the centre (outside of core pre-school hours) to the Pre-School.

Recognising this, the Volunteer Management Committee has recently written to Council tendering their resignation. Whilst I understand that it has been a difficult circumstance in which to end Council’s affiliation with the Committee, this does not diminish the importance of the contribution that the Committee has made to the Gumnut Community Centre over the years.

This Mayoral Minute therefore seeks to formally recognise the more than 35 years of service that the Gumnut Community Centre Volunteer Management Committee have provided to the Cherrybrook Community. I wish to extend Council’s thanks to the final committee being Glenn Martin (Chairperson), Doug Menzies (Treasurer), Nan Horne, Gwen Bitti and Lisa Kelly (committee members) for their years of service and recommend that a plaque be installed on the building which recognises the service of the individuals involved, as well as the history of the building.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT:

1.         Council formally extend its thanks to the members of the Volunteer Management Committee who have provided an exceptional service to the users of the Gumnut Community Centre for more the 35 years.

2.         Council install a plaque on the Gumnut Community Centre building which recognises the contribution of the Volunteer Management Committee and the history of the building.
