Item 17 MM12/17 Representations from Mr Peter Waite ........................................................... 1
Mayoral Minute No. MM12/17
Date of Meeting: 9/08/2017
17 REPRESENTATIONS FROM MR PETER WAITE
I recently met with Mr Peter Waite of Pennant Hills to discuss a number of long standing concerns that he has raised with Hornsby Shire Council over the past few decades.
Whilst I am convinced that the issues have been appropriately examined and responded to numerous times by Council and other relevant external bodies, there is one matter that Mr Waite raised during our meeting which I believe requires attention before I step down as Mayor.
That matter relates to the conduct of Council’s 14 July 1999 Ordinary Meeting where Mr Waite, as a public forum speaker, was subjected to questioning by some Councillors of the day. Whilst I was not a Councillor at the time, I have read a transcript of the Meeting and believe that the comments and questions raised by the Councillors were inappropriate.
I understand that some Councillors who were on that Council have apologised to Mr Waite since the Meeting, however, I am not aware that a formal apology was provided by Council. Although it is belated, I consider it appropriate that an apology be offered to Mr Waite on behalf of Council for the manner in which he was treated at the 14 July 1999 Meeting.
THAT the Mayor offer an apology to Mr Peter Waite on behalf of Council for the inappropriate treatment that Mr Waite received during his Public Forum address at the 14 July 1999 Council Meeting. |
STEVE RUSSELL
Mayor
