Item 13 MM6/18 Tribute to Noel Rosten.................................................................................... 1
Mayoral Minute No. MM6/18
Date of Meeting: 14/03/2018
13 TRIBUTE TO NOEL ROSTEN
On behalf of all Councillors, I would like to acknowledge the recent passing of Noel Rosten, and pay tribute to his contribution to the conservation of our Shire’s bushland. Noel was a friend and colleague to many Councillors and Council staff and I wish express our deepest sympathies to his wife Rae and their children at this time.
Noel was an active member of many community groups within Hornsby Shire which included the Friends of Berowra Valley, Hornsby Conservation Society and the Australian Plant Society. He enjoyed learning and in his quiet way he taught others about botany and ecology. In the wider community, Noel was active with Easy care gardening, National Tree Day and Clean up Australia day activities.
Noel’s passion for the local environment was unquestionable. He loved bushwalking and growing native plants to the extent he set up part of his home garden to propagate plants for the Australian Plant Society. Friday’s were Noel’s field day, where he and small group of volunteers would ‘go bush’ and record the plants of Hornsby Shire. These records now form the backbone of Councils’ Hornsby Herbarium.
In particular and with gratitude, I would like to acknowledge Noel’s leadership and long term dedication to Council’s Bushcare program. He joined the program in 1992 and was involved with Bushcare groups at Arcadia Crescent fire trail, Currawong and Berowra Oval as both a participant and later as a group leader. In addition, Noel was a keen and talented photographer. He regularly entered the Bushcare photograph competition with high quality photographs, many of which have been used in the Bushcare Calendar. In 2016 he won the competition with an outstanding photograph of a Bower bird.
Noel will be remembered for his enduring passion for the bushland, talented photography and friendship. He will be sorely missed by Councillors, Council staff and the community he so diligently contributed to. He leaves a tremendous conservation legacy and I offer the condolences of Hornsby Council especially to Rae, their children and to Noels’ family and friends.
THAT: 1. On behalf of Councillors and Council staff, we offer our sincere condolences to Rae Rosten, family and friends. 2. With gratitude, Council acknowledge the contribution of Noel Rosten to the local community and bushland conservation in the form of an exhibition, award or physical memorial. It is appropriate that any action be discussed with his family, and Council will undertake this at a suitable time. |
