Mayoral Minute No. MM2/19

Date of Meeting: 20/02/2019

9        THE PASSING OF LOCAL RESIDENT HELEN BARKER

Council would like to note the passing of local resident Helen Barker and acknowledge her impressive contribution to the local community, particularly during her 45 years as part of the Hornsby Shire Historical Society. She worked quietly and efficiently, researching many aspects of our past to give us all a better understanding of our shared heritage.

Helen wrote or contributed to a number of important books on local history, including Pioneers of Hornsby Shire, Early Wesleyans of Pennant Hills, both volumes of Houses of Hornsby Shire, and History of Beecroft and Cheltenham. Her final book, Pennant Hills People and Places, was co-authored with Pat Dewey and completed shortly before her death.

Helen was involved with the Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust and in the 1980s she planned and led the first walk around the historic houses of the area. She was active on the Committee of Lillian Fraser Gardens and was a member of the Hornsby Shire Council’s Heritage Committee from its first meeting in June 1994 until her retirement in August 2008.

Helen was 89 years old and her funeral was held at Cherrybrook Uniting Church. We are saddened by her passing but much richer for having known her. She understood the enormous value that can be found in local history and through her quiet passion she helped many others to see it.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council notes the passing of local resident Helen Barker and acknowledges her impressive contribution to the local community.
