Mayoral Minute No. MM9/19
Date of Meeting: 14/08/2019
13 PASSING OF RAY WHITEMAN
Our community recently lost one of its most committed members and I would like to acknowledge his passing. Ray Whiteman was widely known as the Mayor of Glenorie, a title he earned through decades of dedicated service to the village and its people.
Ray’s greatest legacy is undoubtedly the Glenorie Memorial Hall, to which he donated countless hours of maintenance work. He did much the same for the Wal Buckingham Memorial Garden and Glenorie Cenotaph. None of these local landmarks would be in the excellent condition they are today without his devoted efforts.
Ray’s leadership was also crucial in the annual memorial services for our veterans. This was of personal significance to Ray, who had served in the navy. He was also vice president of the Glenorie RSL Sub-Branch, as well as president of the Glenorie Progress Association.
It takes a very special type of person to fulfil the role that Ray took on within his community. He was extraordinarily conscientious and entirely selfless. It bothers me that nothing I say can possibly repay the debt owed to him by the people of Glenorie, but I am comforted to know he wouldn’t mind. Ray was never motivated by a need for public accolades. All of his actions came from a genuine love for his neighbours and an unquenchable desire to help others.
THAT Council notes the passing of local resident Ray Whiteman and acknowledges his impressive contribution to the local community. |
The Honourable Cr PHILIP RUDDOCK
