Mayoral Minute No. mm1/20

Date of Meeting: 12/02/2020

17      PASSING OF BEN SWANE

Hornsby Shire Council would like to respectfully mark the passing of Ben Swane, a noted local businessman whose nursery has been a feature in the Dural community for more than a century. It was first started by his father Ted in 1919, then Ben and his siblings formally joined the business in 1958.

Ben has been widely described as “gardening royalty” and achieved many impressive accolades throughout his long career. These included the prestigious Graham Gregory Medal for outstanding contribution to the Australian horticultural industry and being named a Member of the Order of Australia. He was President of Nursery & Garden Industry Australia and awarded Life Membership. He was also selected as Australian Nurseryman of the Year in 1980.

Ben was heavily committed to the local community, serving with a number of organisations. These included the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, Boy Scouts and the Bush Fire Brigade. His work with Rotary earned him the Paul Harris Fellowship for services.

I attended his funeral on behalf of Council and was gratified to see so many families, friends and the community paying their respects.

Ben was 92 years old and will be sorely missed.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council notes the passing of local resident Ben Swane and acknowledges his impressive contribution to the local community.

The Honourable Cr PHILIP RUDDOCK

Mayor
