14      PASSING OF MR PETER WAITE

Council joins with many people in celebrating the life of much-respected Pennant Hills resident Mr Peter Waite who passed away recently after a period of illness.

Peter served as a Hornsby Shire Councillor during the years 1980 to 1987 and maintained a reputation of examining in detail all matters that were before Council. Following his period as a Councillor, Peter became a prolific correspondent and advocate to Council on all matters Hornsby and regularly spoke at Council meetings in respect of topics like bioremediation and the history and future of Old Mans Valley. This led to him being referred to by some in the community as the “unofficial conscience of Council”.

Peter was a past President of the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills and was awarded an Order of Australia in 1996 for his work on behalf of the community. He was a passionate supporter and advocate of Hornsby Hospital, and in the late 1990s when the Hospital’s potential closure was being discussed, he headed a campaign to stop the proposal being progressed.

Peter had a long association with the scouting movement. He joined the Scouts in 1940 and in 2020 was presented with an award recognising 60 years of service to the organisation. He was a site and services leader at many Australian jamberoos and worked extensively on the World Jamberoo in 2000. He also physically assisted with the construction of the Cherrybrook Scout Hall.

Peter’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from many across the community and his loss will be felt keenly by all those who knew him. I, along with Peter’s family and many other friends and community members, will be attending a Memorial Service to celebrate Peter’s life on 20 July 2022.

We are all poorer for the loss of Peter Waite and I, on behalf of Council, wish to pass on our heartfelt condolences to his wife Margaret, the entire extended Waite family and their many friends.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Peter Waite whose contribution to community was significant.

The Honourable Cr PHILIP RUDDOCK

Mayor
