10      THE PASSING OF MR ALLAN WATSON

Hornsby Shire Council joins with many people in celebrating the life of Mr. Allan Watson who recently passed away.

Uncle Allan Watson worked tirelessly for the Darug people for many years and was one of the founding members of Hornsby Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee (HATSICC) which was the first of its kind in Northern Sydney when it was established.

Through Uncle Allan’s involvement with HATSICC, Council greatly benefited from his input. He proudly represented and upheld the interests of the Darug people and Aboriginal history, Culture, and Custodianship. He worked tirelessly with Council and other key local organisations such as Hornsby Area Residents for Reconciliation (HARR) to undertake projects like Children’s Voices for Reconciliation and the erection of the original entry signage that recognised the Traditional Owners of the Shire. He volunteered on HATSICC from 2006 till retiring in 2016.

Uncle Allan was very much an ally of the Darug people and spoke on their behalf, he was also a supporter of the GuriNgai people. Uncle Allan stood beside all Aboriginal people to ensure their voices were heard, he was courageous in his solidarity standing with mob across Australia. This was demonstrated by the exceptionally large number of people attending his funeral, including myself and a number of my Councillor colleagues.

He left an impact wherever he went through being a true Gentle man with a strong belief in acting with respect.

Uncle Allan and his wife Auntie Edna Watson often worked together teaching and discussing Aboriginal Culture, history and Custodianship including giving talks at Hornsby Library.

We acknowledge Uncle Allan Watson’s valuable contribution to HATSICC and the local Aboriginal community in general and convey our most heartfelt condolences to his family and his many friends.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Allan Watson whose contribution to the Hornsby Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee was significant.
