Item 2     MM4/23 The Passing of Ms Robin Timmins.................................................................. 1

Mayoral Minute No. MM4/23

Date of Meeting: 23/08/2023

Council joins with many people in celebrating the life of much-respected Hornsby Shire resident Robin Timmins OAM who passed away recently at the age of 77. Robin was an enthusiastic and valued participant in community life in Hornsby Shire and an early trailblazer for women in sport.

A resident of Pennant Hills and Thornleigh for 30 years, I knew Robin well. She contributed greatly to the community through her work with the Beecroft Garden Club and as President of the Beecroft Probus Club. A lover of travel, Robin also loved her hometown, sharing its vibrant history by organising local heritage walking tours.

In a moment when we have been swept up in women’s sport and the success of the Matildas, we pay tribute to Robin for her role as a ground breaker, paving the way for women’s participation in sport in Australia.

Robin was the first female rugby referee in Australia, and for many years was the Secretary of the NSW Rugby Referees Association. In that role, she organised referees to appear at competitive club games and State games at the highest level.

Upon her retirement in 2016, Robin was NSW Rugby's longest serving employee. She was awarded an OAM in part for her services to Rugby Union during her 48-year career in the sport.

As a grandfather of two incredibly accomplished young women who excel in all sports, I thank Robin for creating opportunities for my granddaughters and other girls who can dare to dream of a future in competitive sport.

On a personal level, Robin was also a great supporter of my career and a good friend. I will miss our weekly catch ups following her gym session in Pennant Hills.

We are all poorer for the loss of Robin Timmins OAM but richer for her great contribution to the Shire and beyond. She was a true inspiration and valued community participant who leaves a proud legacy. On behalf of Council, I wish to pass on our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and the many people whose lives she touched. She will be missed.

THAT Council offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ms Robin Timmins OAM whose contribution to the community was significant.

The Honourable Cr PHILIP RUDDOCK
