7        CLOSURE OF PENNANT HILLS POST OFFICE

I was disappointed to receive notification last week from Australia Post of its intention not to seek a new site for the Pennant Hills post office following its vacation of the current premises at the end of April.

This is extremely disappointing for Council and our community.

We are very concerned about the loss of this vital facility servicing Pennant Hills and the surrounding area. Pennant Hills is a major business centre in Hornsby Shire and crucial to our community, particularly for our Shire’s ageing population.

As part of their correspondence, Australia Post has outlined that other post offices are available in nearby suburbs. However as one of Hornsby Shire’s largest suburban areas, with a population of over 22,000, as well as numerous businesses, Pennant Hills is a significant area with its own deserving community, many of whom have written to me expressing their concerns.

We are grateful that Australia Post has committed to communicating with the community about the closure. However, it is disappointing that it did not engage with them prior to making the decision to no longer maintain a presence in the area.

Council fought hard to stop the closure of Brooklyn Post Office and feel the same about a further reduction to postal services in Hornsby Shire. With the closure of local banks, Australia Post has obligations to our residents that go beyond revenue streams.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council:

1.           Advocates on behalf of the community by appealing to Australia Post to reconsider its position and do all it can to maintain the essential service of a post office in Pennant Hills.

2.           Seeks further dialogue with Australia Post about how Council could support it to do this.

3.           Continues to liaise with the state and federal members seeking their support on this important matter.
